Bale bowling! Or, things farmers think are funny?

Bale bowling! Or, things farmers think are funny? We’re still a week away from what we call “full-graze” ( enough grass on the pastures for the herd that we don’t have to supplement with extra hay) but we’re feeding hay the fun way and building soil in the forest at the same time. We bring the round bales up hill and roll them down so that the cows have to come uphill and help us trample dead fall and brush. They will leave some hay behind that will hopefully add some ground cover and grass seed, and will definitely leave fertilizer behind (urine and manure).

Sometimes we like to play the “Napping? … or dead?” game around here!

Jasper may technically be a draft cross (Percheron/quarter horse) but he thinks he is a 1300 pound puppy- everything is a toy that belongs in his mouth (ropes, saddle pads, your hands 😅…!). Come ride him this summer at summer camp, or come on a trail ride with us (link in bio for details).

And…here we go again! Today was a day filled with so many simple things that should have been so easy but seemed to go just slightly wrong/against the grain, like swimming upstream for no reason. Spring madness is in full swing! The skid steer got stuck in the mud and dog is my copilot for pulling it out with the F-150 (she’s probably the best cheerleader but maybe the worst actual cattle dog?!) A few cute calves are on the ground now after a few unfortunate death losses to start the calving season. Somehow every new spring hits us in the face with the joy of the earth reawakening, but also the challenges of dealing with the actual management of the animals - the highs and lows of death and life that we signed up for in this job. Can’t wait to get back to it tomorrow - I think… 😅

June ➡️ April

This mother daughter pair was weaned 4 months ago and then reunited recently as we’re consolidating all the animals to one herd for grazing season. It’s fun to see how they still seek out each other’s company.

We’re looking forward to the wave of grass almost as much as them.

Getting an early start on spring chores! And yes,

Getting an early start on spring chores! And yes, we are obsessed with using our hay bales as ladders. Everything around here multi-tasks (our children are also sometimes employees, our employees are also friends, our cows are also weed eaters, our horses are also lawn mowers, our milk cow also produces the best beef calf every year … I could go on forever here but I’ll spare you all 😆).

Oops…I opened the closet to grab the broom and clean the house but somehow we ended up here instead 😆.

Apparently my broom closet is a portal to the horses.

Anytime I worry about my outside horses in winter,

Anytime I worry about my outside horses in winter, I go and ride them, or just catch them for that matter. Man, are they fresh! December was 30 degrees warmer but wet and sloppy and they complained to us all the time. I’m pretty sure they prefer this cold weather to July and bugs. It’s warmed up to a sunny 15 degrees right now but headed for negative temps tonight.
